Valentine’s Day is an explosion of pink, red, glitter, hearts and flowers- everything that kids love! It inspires lots of arts and crafts projects to show love and affection for friends, Mums, Dads, brothers and sisters.

Valentine Mosaic Card

Start your card with a plain base of folded card. Use any colour although pinks, red, silver and gold are most often associated with Valentine’s Day.

You need to cut a large heart shape from another piece of card. The easiest way to make a symmetric heart is to fold the piece of card in two and trace the outline of half of the heart with the centre of your shape at the fold of the card. Cut carefully around the edges of the heart. When you unfold the card, you have a perfectly shaped heart. Make sure that your heart is small enough to sit on the card base.

Cover the heart cut-out with a colourful mosaic pattern. Apply a thin layer of PVA glue and coat the heart with patches of bright, torn tissue paper. Metallic shades are particularly stunning. Apply another thin sweep of glue and leave to dry thoroughly. Don’t worry when PVA glue dries it becomes clear.

When the heart is dry you can glue it to the front of your card. If you wish, make the heart stand proud from the background with a 3D effect. Fold 4 thin strips of paper into accordion shapes and glue them closed so they form tiny tabs. Fix to the back of the heart and finally onto the card base itself. Add a Valentines greeting and a special message to finish.

Sweetheart Shortbread

A simple shortbread recipe makes a delicious Valentine gift for a loved one. Shortbread is great for younger children and inexperienced cooks.

The ingredients you need are:

  • 500g butter
  • 200g sugar
  • 500g plain flour
  • vanilla extract

Pre- heat the oven to 180 C.

Start by creaming the softened butter and sugar together until smooth and fluffy. Add a couple of drops of vanilla extract and gently fold the flour into the mixture. Don’t ‘overwork’ the mixture, treat it carefully so the finished shortbread is light and crumbly.

Bring the mixture together into a firm, smooth dough and roll out to a thickness of about 1cm. Use a heart shaped cutter and lay the biscuits onto a lightly greased baking tray.

Bake for around 12 minutes until the goodies are a golden colour. When the biscuits are cool, go to town with Valentine’s decorations. Try drizzles of melted white chocolate, edible silver balls or desiccated coconut sprinkled onto a simple mixture of icing sugar and water.

For a special touch, put them into a decorated box covered with paper heart cut-outs and ribbon.

Make a pretty variation with some seedless red berry jam. Before putting the biscuits in the oven, make a small dip in the cut out biscuits with a clean thumb. Fill the dent with a little jam and bake as before. They look very pretty and are absolutely perfect for Valentine’s Day.

Other Valentine’s Ideas

  • Make a posy of tiny flowers using an old drinking yoghurt bottle filled with play dough as the base. Push green stems made from pipe cleaner into the dough, topped with blooms of twisted tissue paper rosettes.
  • Create a heart mobile with a cross of wooden dowelling secured and strung with silver florist’s ribbon. Suspend pendants made from hearts cut from foam or card and decorate with feathers.
  • Make a Valentine’s candle by cutting heart shapes from coloured paper towel or serviettes and pasting the shapes to a plain white candle with PVA glue. When you’ve decorated the candle, seal the work with another layer of glue.

Join in the fun, go pink and celebrate Valentine’s Day with some wonderful arts and crafts projects. Almost any idea can be adapted to suit the occasion and the results are always delightful.
